On the hill located on the southern slope of the prehistoric Stražišće fortress, just above Blatsko polje, there is a cemetery where tribal champions were baptised between the 4th and 1st centuries B.C., as well as ordinary folk.

The location of the settlement and cemetery is closely related to the nearby Blatsko polje, the center of which was recently the site of a periodic lake. Due to soil fertility, size and abundance of the bodies of water, Blatsko polje has been the source of life in this area since prehistory to this very day.

Considering burial methods and above all the monumental, unique, and well-preserved architecture, this is a prehistoric cemetery unprecedented for the Mediterranean and surrounding continental areas.

Items in the tombs (various types of weapons, especially spearheads, hundreds of Hellenistic glasses and other vessels, thousands of glass and amber beads ...) are status symbols of this once powerful island community.

In the necropolis, among other things, two tombs for children were explored, in each of which there were buried more than a hundred neonatal infants. The reasons for the separate burial of children are not known.

The necropolis may be reached by a mostly paved paths while from the top of the hill there is a view of Blatsko polje, bay of Vela Luka, Vis, Hvar, Biokovo and Peljesac. The visitors hike on these paths on their own responsibility since the necropolis is not available for sightseeing momentarily, while all the Kopila artefacts are displayed at the Blato Cultural Center.

The wider area of Kopila is a protected area, therefore we ask visitors not to pick plants, and to preserve the monuments and the environment.
